A new study by the Ponemon Institute and ID Experts reveals that healthcare organizations still fear DDoS attacks, and ransomware and malware attacks are new threats to the healthcare industry for 2016. Criminal attacks are still the leading cause of healthcare data breaches, and there’s no sign of that changing anywhere on the horizon.
The Sixth Annual Benchmark Study on Privacy and Security of Healthcare Data by the Ponemon Institute, sponsored by ID Experts, finds that criminal attacks are the leading cause of half of all data breaches in healthcare—up five percent over last year. Employee mistakes, third-party snafus, and stolen computer devices—are cited as the root cause of the other half of data breaches. The study also found that while most healthcare organizations believe they are vulnerable to a data breach, they are unprepared to address new threats and lack adequate resources to protect patient data
